Visit Abu Dhabi for your next family holiday..
Abu Dhabi has seen significant recent investment in tourism, high end hotels and the incredible Formula 1 grand prix circuit. If you are looking for a luxury break with guaranteed sunshine, stunning hotels, World class service and plenty to keep you and your kids busy, could Abu Dhabi be the answer?
Abu Dhabi is far less busy than its more famous neighbour Dubai and less than a third of the size. So expect a much more chilled out experience with less crowds and noise. This may appeal to some families. Prices are also much lower both for the holiday itself and while you are there, so eating out and local attractions will cost you significantly less than Dubai, although remember this is still a premium destination.
There are plenty of things to keep your kids entertained on a break in Abu Dhabi. As well as beautiful sandy beaches and safe, calm waters with a wide array of watersports available. Take a trip to the Corniche, eight kilometres of manicured waterfront where you wil find cafe’s, cycleways and plenty of childrens play areas.
There are plenty of other fun attractions worth a visit. Here are our favourites..
Family things to do and see in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is hot and what better way to cool off and have fun than in a waterpark. Yas Waterworld is set in 15 hectacres and has a wide range of thrilling rides for the whole family. There are some truly unqiue rides here, including the world’s first and largest hydromagnetic waterslide and the 550 metre Bandit Bomber slide which comes complete with lasers, water guns and special effects.
The Worlds only Ferrari themed amusement park is also the Worlds largest indoor theme park. There are some fantastic thrill rides with speed and driving being the theme here. It was recently voted the Middle East’s leading tourist attraction.
Right next to the city is the tranquilty and beauty of the Mangrove National Park. Take a boat trip through the Mangroves and spot the array of bird life, including large numbers of flamingos. As well as the Mangrove park there are three other wildlife options in and around Abu Dhabi. The Emirates zoo is worth a visit and has a large selection of animals including white tigers. The Al Ain zoo is set in a 900 hectare park and has over 4000 animals. On Sir Bani Yas Island just along the coast from the city is the Arabian wildlife park. This is a game park where the animals roam free. 4×4 safaris are available.
Observation deck 300
As its name would suggest the observation deck sits 300 metres above the city. Enjoy the best views in Abu Dhabi while enjoying a delicious high tea.
Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a pardise for shoppers with a selection of huge shopping malls. Yas Mall is the newest and largest addition. This huge centre will keep even the most professional shoppers busy with over 400 shops plus lots of family orientated restaurants and a 20 screen cinema. The centre is directly linked to Ferrari World.
Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit
The Jewel in Abu Dhabi’s crown and one of the most impressive F1 tracks in the World. If your kids are into the Grand Prix they will love a visit to this iconic circuit.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of family friendly hotels in Abu Dhabi. We have picked out our favourites that offer exceptional standards and plenty for the kids to do, including kids clubs….
Hilton Abu Dhabi
This superior 4star hotel is set on a private beach on Abu Dhabi’s vibrant Corniche close to Marina Mall, with stylish rooms, including family rooms that sleep four. The private beach club has three pools, water sports and a kids’ area. The hotel does have a kids club for three years and up. Babysitting is available as are swimming lessons for under two’s and watersports coaching for older kids.
‘ a lavishly imagined dream’ is how the hotel describes itself. This Iconic Abu Dhabi landmark sits in extensive manicured grounds on a pristine beach. This is Abu Dhabi’s most exclusive address and favourite choice of the super rich. If your budget allows then this is the ultimate family destination in Abu Dhabi. There is an excellent kids club for five years an up. They can enjoy lots of fun and games and even a kids beauty salon. Kids will love the Cascades adventure pool, with its lazy river, waterfalls and water flumes. There is also ‘Sarab Land’ where the kids can play under supervison by trained staff.
St Regis Sadiyat Island
Just a short drive from the hustle of the city centre is this stunning Meditteranean inspired beach resort. This award winning resort offers contemporrary style and elegance on one of the best beaches around where Hawksbill turtles come to nest and dolphins often come in close to the beach to play. The Sandcastle kids club takes kids from four years and features indoor and outdoor play areas and activities. Younger kids are allowed but you will have to hire one of the private nannies to supervise them.
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort By Anantara
This is one of the best ways to experience Abu Dhabi with kids! This luxury family resort combines the beauty of the traditional Arabic architecture with the stunning desert sand dunes as a back drop. Your teenagers and children will love camel riding, sand duning and falconry exhibitions. There is a teens club and kids club to keep them happy with games, computers and movies.
When to go..
It rarely rains in Abu Dhabi so anytime you visit expect lots of sunshine. It does get hot though. If you have small kids we would recommend avoiding July and August where temperatures regularly hit 40oC. We know, thats summer school holidays but you may be better off taking advantage of the nice European weather at that time. The Christmas and New Year period see average high’s in the low twenty’s. You may prefer one of the half term dates, with October seeing average temperature’s of 29oC and Easter 27oC.

All three of the resorts offer everything you need to keep your kids happy but without compromising on luxury and comfort which can happen a lot in resorts aimed at families. We particulalry like the Sesame St themed kids clubs and activities and the amazing waterparks at each of the resorts.

Royal Caribbean is our recommended cruise line for families
Recently voted the World’s leading cruise line at the World Travel Awards in London. Royal Caribbean is also known as a pioneer in family cruise holidays with some of the most kid friendly cruises around.
We love Royal Caribbean and always recommend their cruises over any other cruise brands and here is why….
Royal Caribbean Kids clubs..
Royal Caribbean’s award winning Adventure Ocean kids and teen’s clubs are probably the best clubs you will find on a cruise ship. They have five different age groups so all activities, fun and games are designed with this in mind. There is a baby and toddler group so kids from 18 months are catered for, going up to the teen club for kids up to 17 years. There are lots of fun activities, crafts, science experiments, sports and parties and dedicated areas for each age range, where experience qualified staff supervise.
Royal Caribbean kids activities onboard..
RC’s shops are some of the biggest vessels on the seas today. These huge ships are packed with fun activities for kids.
You may have seen the adverts for the Flow Rider on TV, a surfing simulator, hugely popular with children of all ages, where your little ones can test out their surfing skills. They will love the boardwalk on Oasis & Allure of the Seas, with traditional fairground rides such as the Carousel or the dodgems. Older kids will love the skydiving simulator on Anthem of the Seas or the climbing wall. A lot of the ships have indoor ice rinks so you can all have a go at ice skating and many also have golf putting courses. All the ships have a sports court where kids meet up to play various games and make new friends.
Royal Caribbean’s unique Dreamworks experience means your kids can get up close to some of their favourite characters like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda and even have breakfast with them. There are Dreamworks themed activities, shows and parades and films are shown at the 3D cinema or in your cabins.
One of the best features for kids is the H20 zone, the mini water park that is a kid’s heaven, complete with waterfalls, fountains, slides and water cannons, which will keep your kids entertained for hours until you have to drag them out.
Royal Caribbean’s Family Accommodation..
RCs cabins are comfortable and stylish and many have sofa beds or bank beds so can accommodate families easily and at great value. There are also interconnecting cabins and larger suites such as the stunning sky loft suites, which are set over two floors and have a master bedroom plus a kid’s bedroom, living room and dining area. Cabins have TV’s where kids can relax and watch a movie if it all gets too much.
Royal Caribbean’s Family dining..
Even the fussiest kids are well catered for on a Royal Caribbean cruise. There is an amazing choice of eateries from intimate, fine dining speciality restaurants (get a babysitter and go without the kids) to lots of great family options such as the Wipe out cafe, New York pizzeria and various buffet restaurants with a huge choice of dishes. Kids will love the doughnut shop and ice cream parlour.
Royal Caribbean offers a superior cruise experience, with fantastic ships, amazing food and great service and best of all, incredible value. Cruises are full board so all food is included and lots of the activities are free too, making a cruise holiday a great value option. You may be surprised at the price of a Royal Caribbean cruise compared to a similar beach hotel holiday of similar quality.

Las Vegas for children & families?
Is Vegas suitable for children? There is always going to be a debate about whether you should or shouldn’t take kids to Vegas, although there are various things to do and see for younger visitors. Here are a list of our favourites..
Adventuredome – Circus Circus.
Circus Circus is arguably the The number one family hotel in Vegas with lots of fun adventures for kids of all ages. The main attraction is the Adventuredome theme park with two indoor roller coasters the ‘Canyon Baster’ and’ El Loco’, bumper cars, pirate ship, plus rides for smaller kids like the runaway coal train ride, the flying bus and the Frog Hopper. Plus a huge funfair arcade with lots of your favourite fairground games and the Worlds largest permanent Circus, where you can watch the amazing acts for Free.
Big Apple Coaster & Arcade – New York New York
Get your thrills on the world’s first coaster to feature a 180-degree “heartline” twist and dive maneuver, providing more than 1.4 million riders with heart-stopping action and excitement each year. The fun doesn’t stop there! Enjoy the excitement of some of the latest video & arcade games, and attractions in The Big Apple Arcade a firm favourite with the hoardes of kids you will find there at all times of the day.
Shark Reef Aquarium – Mandalay Bay
Shark Reef aquarium is the home of over 2,000 animals including the saw fish, giant rays, endangered green sea turtles, piranha, jellyfish and the rare golden crocodile. This unique exhibit gives you the chance to dive with a higher concentration of exotic sharks than you’d ever find in the wild. You can also experience the newly opened Sea Monsters Revealed, the world’s largest exhibition to uniquely preserved sea creatures. Become an Aquarist for a day and feed our stingrays, shark or turtle in our Animal Encounters program.
Wet and Wild – Las Vegas outskirts
Wet‘n’Wild Las Vegas is Nevada’s premier water park with more than 25 slides and attractions covering more than 20 acres, and a place for both thrill seekers and families. As Las Vegas’ Summer Playground, the park features the Tornado, a premier slide that catapults riders to a zero gravity experience; Rattler, the first slide of its kind in North America; and Constrictor, an extreme water slide featuring some of the tightest turns. Families and those desiring a more relaxing experience can enjoy Paradise Falls, the interactive children’s area with kid friendly slides and a giant dumping bucket; Colorado Cooler lazy river; and Red Rock Bay wave pool. As the park opens for a third season, one of its most popular slides, Zipp Zapp Zoom, will feature a new and exciting addition, Slideboarding, the world’s first waterslide gaming experience. Slideboarding integrates gaming, skill, and competitive sports with the thrills of a water park. Wet’n’Wild is an ideal location for all ages to beat the heat. Remember to slap on the high factor sun cream though – Vegas gets hot!
Secret Garden & Dolphin habitat – Mirage
Kids can Come face-to-face with some of nature’s most exotic and majestic creatures at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. Explore, learn and play in an enchanting world of Bottlenose Dolphins, White Tigers, White Lions and Leopards. See the tiger cubs up close and create paintings with the Dolphins.
Springs Reserve – 1 minute drive from the Strip
The 180-acre Springs Preserve features an array of exhibits, galleries, trails, entertainment and gorgeous desert gardens that are fun and educational for all ages. Its worth checking the weather on the day you go as outside desert temperatures can be dangerously high.
Free stuff in Vegas
The attractions we have listed so far will all cost money and if you plan to do several of them then the budget can get stretched. Don’t worry, there are some great things to do and see in Vegas that dont cost a penny.
Bellagio fountain show and Mirage volcano – These are must see events along the strip and the best things is they are Free. The spectacular Volcano at The Mirage now includes two volcano systems, a lagoon and fire shooters that shoot flame on demand, more than 12 feet into the air. Whereas the spectacular fountain show outside the Bellagio combines water, music and lights and is definitely a must see attraction on your holiday, that your kids will love.
Freemont Street – In downtown Vegas this huge undercover street where you can enjoy live music and the famous Viva Vision light show, all free of charge.
Best family hotels in Vegas..
We mentioned Circus Circus as the number one family hotel in Vegas but we must mention the Mandalay Bay. Much more luxurious than Circus Circus it also has the most kid friendly swimming area with a huge lagoon style pool with its own sandy beach, wave machine and a lazy river that meanders over a quarter of a mile. If your budget allows we would recommend the Mandalay Bay as its a much nice hotel. You can always stay here and visit Circus Circus for the day.
There are now direct flights to Vegas from the UK with a flight time of 10 hours. Indirect flights may be cheaper. Generally hotels in Vegas offer exceptional value as the hotel subsidise rooms as they make their money downstairs in the Casinos, so you could find yourself staying in a 5star luxurious hotel and paying 3star prices. When you are there remember to keep the kids hyrdated and fully sunblocked as it can get extremely hot. You might prefer to take taxis or monoral, tourist train, rather than walking not just to keep out of the sun but also to avoid the hawkers giving out strip club flyers (or worse).
So if you want to take the kids to Vegas we would say YES, take them. Although we wouldn’t recommend it for babies and toddlers. Maybe wait till the kids are a bit older and big enough to ride all the rollercoasters and rides.
If you are planning a family holiday to Las Vegas contact your friendly Family-Trips travel advisor to help plan your ideal Vegas family break.
